BLACK HAWK DOWN: Ridley Scott (2001) Action/war drama based on the best-selling book detailing a near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993 where nearly 100 U.S. Army Rangers, commanded by Capt. Mike Steele, were dropped by helicopter deep into the capital city of Mogadishu to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord which lead to a large and drawn-out firefight between the Rangers and hundreds of Somali gunmen which led to the destruction of two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters in Mogadishu, and the heroic efforts by various Rangers to get to them, centering on Sgt. Eversmann, commanding one Ranger unit named Chalk Four, leading Rangers to the first black hawk crash site, to Warrant Officer Durant who was only survivor of the second black hawk crash site and whom was captured, to Col. McKnight who leads a rescue convoy for the Rangers only to get lost within the hostile city, to Sgt. Sanderson desperately trying to get to the first crash site, to Staff Sgt. Yurek who leads two fellow Rangers, Nelson and Twombly to meet with up their squad, Chalk Four, at the first crash site, to many others involved who where either killed or survived. Dr. Strangelove: Stanley Kubrick (1964) U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely and utterly mad, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He suspects that the communists are conspiring to pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people. The U.S. president meets with his advisors, where the Soviet ambassador tells him that if the U.S.S.R. is hit by nuclear weapons, it will trigger a "Doomsday Machine" which will destroy all plant and animal life on Earth. Peter Sellers portrays the three men who might avert this tragedy: British Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, the only person with access to the demented Gen. Ripper; U.S. President Merkin Muffley, whose best attempts to divert disaster depend on placating a drunken Soviet Premier and the former Nazi genius Dr. Strangelove, who concludes that "such a device would not be a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious". Will the bombers be stopped in time, or will General Jack Ripper succeed in destroying the world ? Written by Colin Tinto {cst@imdb.com}
The Last Ridge: Abbie Kealy (2007) Review This excellent DVD tells a powerful story--in fact, it is the best film documentary yet on the 10th Mountain in World War II, truly getting inside one of the most heroic divisions in the American military history. That the 10th Mountain had an unequaled postwar impact on the sport of skiing makes this film doubly worth watching. The films does a particularly good job in depicting the devastatingly difficult and deadly campaign, interweaving action shots with at least a hundred soldiers' sometimes laconic, sometimes heart-rending commentaries on camera and in letters home, plumbing the depths of fear and courage, of desperation ad elation and craziness evoked in this division's war. To its everlasting credit, "The Last Ridge" recaptures the feeling of the Italian campaign, building quietly without the gloss of heroics, an atmosphere that gradually became emotionally intense, conveying at a gut level the deadly determination of soldiers believing they all shared the grim task fo holding in their hands the future of their nation. --Reviewed by Morten Lund for Skiing Heritage Magazine, September 2007.
